Mums (and Grandmums!) are AMAZING!

Last night, I was just thinking about the tremendous difference women (mums and grandmums especially) make in the world.   Truly, they are the unsung heroes of our society.  It may not be all the glamorous to meal plan, wipe noses, taxi kids to soccer, juggle career and family life, volunteer for the Parent Advisory Committee, coach softball, do laundry, care for sick parents, help with homework and the thousands of things that mums do every day.  But the smallest of these actions transform the lives of others for the better.

I am thinking about a neighbour of mine, Dora.  Dora is married, a mum and grandmum and tireless in her labours to help others. Her day is peppered with family commitments, gardening and a host of volunteer work.  One volunteer project that she is heavily involved with, and truly inspires me, is making layettes for newborns in poverty.  She, along with a few women from her church, work year-round acquiring gently used sleepers, and make cloth diapers, receiving blankets, a baby quilt and hand-knitted sweaters for each newborn.  She told me that some mothers facing deep poverty are so moved by this gift that they find the courage to take their babies home and care for them.  So this gift is about so much more than clothing - it's about hope.  It's a sign that someone out there loves you, and that support is available to help you as your journey through motherhood.  None of us can eliminate world poverty, disease, economic disaster, but everyone of us can change the world.  And that's what Dora and countless of other mums and grandmums do everyday.

So let's celebrate these unsung 's-heroes" - call a mum or grandmum today and tell them why they make the world a better place.  You'll both be richer for it.
